PERMANENT MISSION OF INDIA

REMARKS BY AMBASSADOR RAJIV K. CHANDER ON OCCASION OF THE THIRD INTERNATIONAL DAY OF YOGA - 2017

Dr. Francis Gurry, DG WIPO, our co-host for IDY 2017, our collaborating partners, Isha Foundation, AOM Yoga, the Art of Living, Sivananda Yoga Centre, Integral Yoga, Brahma Kumaris, Sri Chinmoy Centre, and the Indian Association-Geneva, distinguished participants, ladies and gentlemen.

On behalf of Amb. JS Deepak, PR to WTO, Amb. Amandeep Singh Gill, PR to CD and on my own behalf, it gives me great pleasure to welcome you all to this event to celebrate the Third UN International Day of Yoga in Geneva, at the beautiful premises of the WIPO headquarters.

At the outset let me express our thanks and gratitude to Dr. Gurry for the unstinting support provided by him and his enthusiastic colleagues in hosting this event.

The 2014 initiative of the Prime Minister of India Hon’ble Narendra Modi, himself a dedicated and longstanding practitioner of yoga, to have 21 June declared as an International Yoga Day won the overwhelming endorsement of the comity of nations.

As the 2014 UN General Assembly resolution notes yoga provides a holistic approach to health and well-being and that the wider dissemination of information about the benefits of practising yoga would be beneficial for the health of the world population. The President of the 69th session of the UN General Assembly, that adopted the Resolution, stated: “For centuries, people from all walks of life have practiced yoga, recognizing its unique embodiment of unity between mind and body. Yoga brings thought and action together in harmony.”

Since June 2015 the UN IDY has been celebrated with great fervor and enthusiasm the world over including in Geneva, the European home of the United Nations.

As an emergent India plays a greater role on the world stage it is with a positive intent and determination to contribute to the betterment of mankind.  Yoga is one such contribution by India for the better health and greater happiness of people all over the world.

I would like to thank the organizations that assisted the Permanent Mission in organizing this event. I once again thank Dr. Francis Gurry, himself a dedicated practitioner of yoga since a couple of decades, for all the assistance. A big thank you to all of you for coming today to join in the celebrations and all the hardworking colleagues in the Mission and WIPO who have put together this event.  Wishing you and your families’ health and happiness. Thank you.
